I’m a Dad #8

A few weeks ago, I was having a terrible day at work.

The printer kept giving me the PC LOAD LETTER error All of my network printers were lost and I spent the better part of the morning reinstalling them.

Someone sent me a file via Lotus Notes and after editing for half an hour, Word froze. I didn’t save the file as anything and Word didn’t autosave, so I had to do it over again. After I finally finished, the person was pretty upset that it took me so long.

Someone took work I did and claimed it as their own and got all the credit.

I was the last one to find out about leftovers from a luncheon and all that was left was the garnish and bologna.

I was enjoying time on the throne when someone turned off the light as they were leaving the bathroom.

I got bumped in the hallway and the other person didn’t so much as give me a second glance.

I got chewed out for something I didn’t have a direct hand in.

Nothing seemed to be going right.

I got a papercut.

On the way home I must have had a “Please Cut Me Off, I Don’t Mind” sticker on the side of my car because everyone was cutting me off.

After parking the car, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Failing so miserably at climbing the corporate ladder sure makes me feel like a nobody.

When I got into the house, D1 drops the book she was reading (she loves to read so this was huge), shouts, “APPA!”, then shouts “YAY!” as she runs over to me, gives me a hug and says, “I love you, appa! I missed you!”

Life may beat me down and make me feel like a nobody, but as long as I’m somebody to my daughters, I’m good. IAD

Um…is this a secret blog written by my husband?! Gosh, this sounds just like him!

Glad that your little girls think you’re a rock star–my dad is one too!

Your husband is a corporate ladder failing, paper cut getting, awesome dad?! I like him already! And it’s going to be a sad, sad day when D1 realizes daddy can’t fix everything.

And I’m emailing this to my hubs–it will think it’s hysterical!

Wait. Word didn’t auto-save? That’s suspicious. It should always auto-save. Not the first I’ve heard of this either. Time for a class-action lawsuit! Corporate life is hard enough (as you’ve so eloquently proven) and certainly Mr. Gates/Mr. Balmer both have cash to spare, right?

Side-note: I’m contemplating a paternity suit against TheBill as well. He and I look a little alike (we’re both white), so it’s likely he’s my father and I’m his long lost bastard son. The man *owes* me.

Let me know how that paternity suit goes. If you win, I’m pretty sure I’m separated from you by no more than 6 degrees.

The corporate world can be a gruesome and ungrateful place to spend most hours of our day. There’s nothing better than receiving a joyful, sincere welcome from our little ones after such a rough day. I go out of town every other week for a few days for work, and I get the biggest hugs from my kids when I get back. There’s nothing better than that in the world!

      Agreed. It’s such a blessing!

Climbing the corporate ladder is so overrated. Rope burns and such. And doing your business in the dark. I remember the days of scrambling for luncheon leftovers well. Love this post – and hearing from a dad.
ps – thank you so much for visiting my humble little web-abode and the kind words…

I work in a much smaller office now, but remember the days of leftover luncheon food! I was always amazed when someone would bring in Dunkin Donuts on a Friday and there may be have been 1/4 of a Munchkins box leftover, and on Monday, someone would open the box, smell it and eat the dried things anyway!

Hooray for being the #1 Daddy! 😀

I’ve lost respect for more people than I’d like to count over the things they’ve done with/for luncheon leftovers. It’s almost like the principles in play at a buffet: the food’s not very good, but you enjoy it because of the value proposition. Only with luncheon leftovers, people are willing to eat much, much worse.

This was so sweet! I feel the same about my dog. She can undo so much bad just when she greets me at the door. Being met with undying love upon entering your house is just the bestest!

It really is – nothing beats it. Well, a glass or two of wine doesn’t hurt. 🙂

Nothing like it in the world

I remember those crappy work days. Sigh. My favorite part of this post though was that you wrote “I got a papercut”. I laughed out loud! It’s funny how the little things we don’t normally pay attention to suddenly seem significant when you are having a crap day.

I guess you could call it injury to insult.

  10. August 12, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Amen to that, Pop! It’s important to have perspective about the small stuff and the really wonderful big stuff!

I’ve SO got to get that ring tone!

I never understood why it made so many awful noises when you dialed…

and P.S.? I also have typed in dicks dot com, only to come up horrified. Dicks sporting goods REALLY should change their name.
